Kingdom of Sunndi - Deities
back
When discussing faith and religion within Sunndi, one should realize two things.
First of all, religion within the Flanaese is based on a pantheon. This means that the average farmer will pray to Beory for a good harvest, Pelor when he is injured or needs protection and to Zilchus when going to the market. Very few people worship one deity to the exclusion of all others. Even clerics of a particular deity will offer a prayer to another god under the right circumstances (there are of course exceptions to this).
Secondly, the Sunndians favor their freedom and they hate it when other people tell them how to live their lives. Hence faiths that aggressively try to convert people or demand too much from their faithful will find few people willing to join their churches. This is not to say there is no competition between the various faiths of Sunndi, just that the battle for the souls is a lot more subtle and rarely takes violent forms. In short, the Sunndians in general do not care what god you worship as long as you let them be.
The following list of deities makes a differentiation between major and minor faiths. This does not necessarily has anything to do with the numbers of worshippers of said deities within Sunndi. It says something about the political and physical might (the amount of high level clerics available) of the faiths.
For example, King Hazendel is a cleric of Trithereon, and as such, the faith of Trithereon has the most political might even though the deity is not overly popular among the dwur of the Glorioles, the elves of Rieuwood or even the simple farmers of the central lands. Of course, their martial and adventurer outlook on life also give them many powerful members.
Pelor and Beory, on the other hand, are both deities of the common man. Unlike Beory, the followers of Pelor have a rather martial outlook on life and they spring into action quickly. Hence both their political influence and physical might is nearly equal to that of the temple of Trithereon, while Beory's faith is considered but a minor one.
Moradin, Fortubo and Ulaa are worshipped by miners, shepherds and above all the first line of defenders against Ahlissa: the inhabitants of the Hollow Highlands, the Glorioles and in some parts of the Hestmark Highlands. Their followers have seen a lot of action during the Greyhawk Wars and the people of Sunndi respect them for their sacrifices.
