Kingdom of Sunndi - Counties and Nobles
back
Sunndi is a feudalistic state ruled by a hereditary king. It is divided in 18 counties ruled in general by a hereditary count,
though some counties use a different title or even method of ruling themselves.
While each county has got some considerable freedom in governing themselves, there is one basic set of laws that
each county has to follow. These laws are known as the King's Laws.
The king is mainly involved with the safety of Sunndi and foreign affairs.
Unlike in many monarchies the king does not have absolute power.
When Hazendel was chosen as king he made sure that no king or noble would hold absolute power
within his or her own domain. The power of the nobles was reduced to prevent the corruption and power
abuse of the old Great Kingdom from ever returning. Both the rulers and the common populace greatly fear this
from happening and as such the abuse of power by government officials on general is punished quickly and
somewhat harshly.
The Congress of Lords keeps the power of the king in check. The Congress consists of the counts of Sunndi,
including the mayor of Pitchfield and New Keep, the representatives of the six most influential temples of
Sunndi (Pelor, Trithereon, the Queen's Halls, the Eliestraiir (olven faiths), the Samryntar (dwur faiths), and Yondalla) and a representative of the dwarven
kingdom of the Glorioles. This council can actually overrule any decision made by the king if more then 2/3 of
the members agree, but on general they advice. They do have a big say on financial matters since each member
provides the actual taxes to the kingdom.
Each county has a congress of it's own as a check on the power
of the count. These congresses are more commonly known as County Councils. The land possessing nobles of a
county have an automatic seat on these councils, but the inhabitants of the county elect several members
(depending on the population density).
